A system boiler is a middle-ground option between a combi boiler and a conventional boiler. It provides both central heating and hot water, like a combi, but stores hot water in a separate cylinder, like a conventional system—without needing a cold water tank in the loft.
How It Works:
Water is supplied directly from the mains (like a combi).
The boiler heats the water and stores it in a hot water cylinder (usually in an airing cupboard).
It supplies hot water to taps and showers and provides central heating via radiators.
Best For:
Homes with multiple bathrooms: System boilers are ideal for households where more than one person may use hot water at the same time. Since they store hot water in a cylinder, they can meet higher demand more reliably than a combi.
Medium to large homes: If your home has 2+ bathrooms or a higher hot water demand, a system boiler is often a better choice than a combi.
Homes with limited loft space: Unlike a conventional boiler, a system boiler doesn’t need a cold water tank in the loft, so it’s good for homes where space is tight upstairs.
